PREFACE.

MUCH has been done in modern religious literature for the life and labours of St. Paul, but comparatively little for the life of St. Peter. This apparent neglect may have partly arisen from the false position assigned to him in the opinions of a large portion of Christendom. But, in the very fact that a superstitious and mythical interest has gathered around his name, there is the greater need for a Scriptural delineation of his character, and a complete view of the facts of his history so far as they are authenticated. The following pages contain an attempt in this direction; not merely to follow the facts of St. Peter's life as they are recorded in the New Testament, but also to give a brief account and exposition of all that he did, said, and wrote, as a man and an apostle of the Lord.
