PROSPECTUS FOR 1857.

VOLUME VIII.

THE GUARDIAN:

A MONTHLY MAGAZINE, DEVOTED TO THE SOCIAL, LITERARY AND RELIGIOUS INTERESTS OF YOUNG MEN AND LADIES.

EDITED BY REV. H. HARBAUGH.

On the First of January, 1857, the Guardian will commence its EIGHTH VOLU E It is not weary in laboring for the young, to whom it is dedicated and devoted, and from whose kind hands it has received abiding favor and encouragement.

The Guardian will keep on its accustomed course. It will be, as heretofore, devoted to the highest interests of the young, at the most solemn and interesting period of their life. It will offer its friendly councils to them in an earnest though free and cheerful way. It will solemnly seek to warn them against the wrong, and affectionately allure them to the right. The Editor will endeavor to make its contents true, pure, fresh, and healthy as the morning of life. It will particularly urge self-culture and early piety as of the highest importance. It will seek to move in the element of its motto: Life-Light-Love."

The Guardian has no denominational or party bias. It interferes not with controversies either in Church or State. It is its ambition to take the quiet way of peace and love. It would turn the attention of its readers to that first and greatest of duties, the cultivation of the heart, mind, social feelings, and pious affections. It will have its reward if it can be the means of making Hearts better, Homes happier, aud Heaven surer. The evidence that it has in a degree done this, which the experience of seven years has furnished, is more precious to us than gain or gold. Cheerfully, hopefully, and beiievingly we look into the future as we take our pilgrim-staff in hand to travel another year.

The Guardian contains thirty-two pages monthly, making a handsome volume of three hundred and eighty-four pages at the end of the year.

WILL BE PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 2D, A POEM ENTITLED

JANE EATON;

OR, THE SUNDAY SCHOOL.

BY A SUPERINTENDENT.

The importance of the Sunday School in a neighborhood, and its value to the youth of our land is here presented in the glowing and attractive language of the Poet, and will commend itself to all who feel interested in this department of religious training.

The work just published by the Sunday School Union, written by Rev. James W. Alexander, D. D., of New York, called "The Sunday School and its Adjuncts," has awakened a fresh interest in all that relates to the rising generation, and by all who have read that work, this Poem will be well received, giving, as it does, in a chaste and agreeable style-the organization of a Sunday School in a rural district the characters attracted by the novelty of the movement, and the happy results that followed. Without going more into detail, we are allowed to add the following extract from a letter writteu by Rev. Henry Harbaugh, author of " The Sainted Dead," "The Heavenly Recognition," &c.

"After perusing the Poem carefully several times, I hesitate not to say that in my opinion it has decided merits. The story is plausible and well sustained-the characters are true and natural, and the rythm is good. No one can read it without feeling the soothing power of the highest harmony-the poetry of religion. It will be welcomed by all who have felt how much true poetry as well as pure bliss there is in doing good."

The volume will be printed with large type, on finely calendered paper, making a neat 12mo. volume, cloth, gilt...
