hall rebuke many people; and they fhall beat their fwords into ploughfhares, and their fpears into pruning hooks, nation fhall not lift up fword against nation, neither fhall they learn war any more."

This place proves that Jerufalem will be the city where Chrift will dwell when he is judge among the nations, at the time when wars fhall ceafe throughout all the earth.

Jefus Chrift fays that Jerufalem is the city of the great king. Matth. v. 35, "Neither by Jerufalem, for it is the city of the great king." Chrift is that great king, who will be great in the midst of Zion. When he spake of the deftruction of Jerufalem, by the Romans, he faid that the Gentiles fhould hold Jerufalem until certain times were fulfilled. Luke xxi. 24, "And they fhall fall by the edge of the fword, and fhall be led away captive into all nations, and Jerufalem fhall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled." It is remarkable that Jerufalem has been in the poffeffion of the Gentiles from the time that Titus led the Jews away to this day; and it will be fo until the Jews return to their land, and prepare for the coming of him who owns the city, where he who once fuffered without the gates of Jerufalem, will be honored within its walls for one thousand years.

There are a number of prophecies that plainly declare that Jerufalem will yet be built and quietly inhabited, without any fear of their enemies, and that the king of glory will be with them. This time has never been, I fhall here mention a few of the many which speaks of this glorious circumstance.

The first prophecy, which I fhall mention concerning the building of Jerufalem, as the refidence of Chrift, is recorded in Ifaiah i. 26, 27—" And I will restore thy judges as at the firft, and thy counsellors as at the begining; afterwards thou shalt be called the city of righteoufnefs, the faithful city. Zion fhall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteoufnefs."

Jerufalem, or Zion, has never been in a fituation to answer this description, "A city of righteousness and

faithfulness." The certainty of Jerufalem's being built for the refidence of the king of glory in the thoufand years of his reign on the earth, is recorded in Isaiah ii. 2, 3, "And it fhall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's houfe fhall be established in the top of the mountains, and fhall be exalted above the hills, and all nations fhall flow unto it. And many

people fhall go and fay, come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths, for out of Zion fhall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerufalem."

In this prophecy, Zion and Jerufalem are mentioned as the feat of government in the last days, where the Lord fhall dwell when all nations fhall obey his law. This time has never been; før then Christ in Jerufalem, fhall judge among the nations, and wars fhall ceafe to the ends of the earth. This fhews that Jerufalem fball yet be built as the city of the great king. Another prophecy which I think refers to the building of Jerufalem, for Chrift, is recorded in Isaiah iv. 2, 3, 4, 5"And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerufalem, fhall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jeru falem, when the Lord fhall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and fhall have purged the blood of Jerufalem from the midft thereof, by the fpirit of judgment, and by the fpirit of burning. And the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her affemblies, a cloud and fmoke by day, and the fhining of a flaming fire by night; for upon all the glory fhall be a defence." This appears to refer to the fame thing as the other place just mentioned.

This fame prophet has given a beautiful description of Jerufalem, at the time when it fhall be built as the city of the great king, who fhall dwell there. See chapter xxxiii. 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, "Look upon Zion the city of our folemnities; thine eyes fhall fee Jerufalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down, not one of the stakes thereof fhall ever be removed, neither

hall any of the cords thereof ever be broken; but there the glorious LORD will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein fhall go no gally with oars, neither fhall gallant fp pass thereby; for the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will fave us. Thy tacklings are loofed; they could not well strengthen their mafts; they could not fpread the fail; then is the prey of a great fpoil divided; the lame take the prey. And the inhabitants fhall not fay I am fick; the people that dwell therein fhall be forgiven their iniquity." Here is a plain account of Jerufalem when the king dwells there; to be feen in his beauty, when all the inhabitants fhall be righteous.

Ifaiah mentions the great earthquake which is fpoken of by Zechariah, and his victory over the kings of the earth, and that after this the Lord fhall reign in Jerufa lem in the prefence of the raised faints who will dwell with him there, chap. xxiv. 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, "Then, the moon fhall be confounded, and the fun afhamed, when the Lord of host's shall reign in Mount Zion, and in Jerufalem, and before his ancients gloriously."

From what Zechariah has said, it is evident that when Jerufalem is rebuilt for Christ, that it will be watered beyond what it ever was before, and that by reason of the great earthquake when Chrift comes to the mount of Olives, the hills fouth of Jerufalem will become a plain, fo that men may dwell there, and there will never be any more destruction among the people forever-fee Zechariah xiv. 8, 9, 10, 11, “And it fhall be in that day, that living waters fhall go out of Jerufalem; half of them towards the former fea, and half of them towards the hinder; in fummer and winter fhall it be. And the Lord fhall be king over all the earth, in that day fhall there be one Lord, and his name one. All the land fhall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon fouth of Jerufalem; and it fhall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate, unto the place of the firft gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of of Hananeel unto the kings wine-preffes. And men shall

M

dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerufalem fhall be fafely inhabited."

All this is to take place after Chrift's feet stand on the mount of Olives, when the great army is flain. See ver. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 12, after it is faid that the army is destroyed, it is mentioned that Jerufalem will be the place where the nations who are not cut off, will come to worship the king when he dwells there. Verfe 16, 17, "And it fhall come to pafs, that every one that is left, of all the nations which came against Jerufalem, fhall even go up from year to year to worship the king, the Lord of hofts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. And it shall be, that whofo will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerufalem to worship the king, the Lord of hofts, even upon them shall be no rain."

To complete the defcription of Jerufalem when built for the king, the prophet adds in ver. 21, of this chapter, thefe words, "Yea, every pot in Jerufalem and Judah fhall be holinefs unto the Lord of hofts; and all they that facrifice fhall come and take of them, and feethe therein; and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the houfe of the Lord of hosts."

These are a few of the many prophecies, which prove that Jerufalem will yet be rebuilt, and be the place where Christ will dwell, when he takes the kingdom, to reign before his ancients gloriously.

It is evident from what is faid in Ezekiel, that when this city is built, it will be very large indeed, as each one may fee by reading the eight laft chapters of that book. According as fome have calculated Ezekiel's meafure, it will be about fifty miles in circumference, or twelve and half miles fquare, and the fquare where the holy houfe is to ftand, will be four miles in circumference. We have a general defcription of this city, in Ezekiel xlviii. 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, "And these are the goings out of the city on the north fide four thousand and five hundred measures. And the gates of the city fhall be after the names of the tribes of Ifrael; three gates northward; one gate of Reuben, one gate of Judah, one gate of Levi. And at the eaft fide four thousand and five hundred; and

three gates; one gate of Jofeph, one gate of Benjamin, one gate of Dan. And at the fouth fide four thousand and five hundred measures; and three gates, one gate of Simeon, one gate of Iffachar, one gate of Zebulun. At the weft fide four thousand and five hundred, with their three gates; one gate of Gad, one gate of Afher, one gate of Naphtali. It was round about eighteen thoufand measures, and the name of the city from that day forth fhall be, THE LORD IS THERE.'

""

There is no doubt but this city when built, will exceed all that ever has been built; though it will be inferior to the holy city, the new Jerufalem, which will be after the day of judgment.

2. I am to defcribe the houfe,or temple, which will be built in the fquare of this city, when Chrift reigns on the earth a thoufand years.

That fuch an houfe will yet be built in the land of Canaan is plain from the prophecies. People in general are taught, that the latter houfe, which is to be more glorious than the one built by Solomon, means the church of Chrift; but this is a mistake it is true that the church is called an houfe; but there is another mentioned, which will be built of ftone, wood, iron, brafs, filver and gold; which will be collected from different nations for that purpose.

Some have thought that the house built by Zorobabel, is the one mentioned; but that was inferior to the one built by Solomon; and the one built by Herod, lacked many things which were in the first. I fhall mention fome of the prophecies which fpeak of this houfe which will be built for the king of glory when he reigns in Jeru falem a thousand years.

The first I fhall mention is recorded in Ifaiah 1x. 7, All the flocks of Kedar fhall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth fhall minifter unto thee; they fhall come up with acceptance on mine altar, and I will glorify the HOUSE of my glory." That this is the houfe to be built hereafter, is plain from what is faïd in ver. 13, 17, where this houfe is called God's fanctuary. "The glory of Lebanon fhall come unto thee, the fir
