5 Hands that are clean, and hearts sincere,

He never will despise ;

And cheerful duty he'll prefer
To costly sacrifice.

DRENNAN.

God may be worshipped in every Place.

1 THE heaven of heavens cannot contain
The universal Lord;

Yet he in humble hearts will deign
To dwell and be adored.

2 Where'er ascends the sacrifice
Of fervent praise and prayer,
Or on the earth or in the skies,
The God of heaven is there.

3 His presence is diffused abroad

Through realms, through worlds unknown: Who seek the mercies of our God

Are ever near his throne.

BOWRING.

Pure Worship.

1 THE offerings to thy throne which rise,
Of mingled praise and prayer,

Are but a worthless sacrifice
Unless the heart is there.

2 Upon thine all-discerning ear
Let no vain words intrude;
No tribute but the vow sincere,
The tribute of the good.

3 My offerings will indeed be blest,
If sanctified by thee;

If thy pure spirit touch my breast
With its own purity.

4 O, may that spirit warm my heart
To piety and love,

And to life's lowly vale impart
Some rays from heaven above.

Sincerity in Worship.

MARTINEAU'S COL.

1 LORD, when we bend before thy throne,
And our confessions pour,

Teach us to feel the sins we own,
And shun what we deplore.

2 Our contrite spirits pitying see,
And penitence impart ;
And let a healing ray from thee
Beam hope upon the heart.

3 When our responsive tongues essay
Their grateful songs to raise,
Grant that our souls may join the lay,
And rise to thee in praise.

4 When we disclose our wants in prayer,
May we our wills resign,

And not a thought our bosoms share,
Which is not wholly thine.

5 Let faith each meek petition fill,
And waft it to the skies;

And teach our hearts 'tis goodness still
That grants it or denies.

Delight in Worship. Ps. 84.

1 MY soul, how lovely is the place
To which thy God resorts!
'Tis heaven to see his smiling face,
Though in his earthly courts.

WATTS.

2 There the great Monarch of the skies
His saving power displays,
And light breaks in upon our eyes
With kind and quickening rays.

3 With his rich gifts the heavenly Dove
Descends and fills the place,

While Christ reveals his wondrous love,
And sheds abroad his grace.

4 My heart and flesh cry out for thee,
While far from thine abode :

When shall I tread thy courts, and see
My Savior and my God?

5 Could I command the spacious land,
And the more boundless sea,

For one blest hour at thy right hand
I'd give them both away.

1 COME, thou Almighty King!

Help us thy name to sing;
Help us to praise;

ANONYMOUS.

Father all glorious,

O'er all victorious,

Come and reign over us,
Ancient of Days.

2 Come, thou all-gracious Lord,
By heaven and earth adored,
Our prayer attend;

Come, and thy children bless;
Give thy good word success;
Make thine own holiness
On us descend.

3 Never from us depart;
Rule thou in every heart,
Hence, evermore.
Thy sovereign majesty
May we in glory see,
And to eternity

Love and adore.

[blocks in formation]

1 WITH sacred joy we lift our eyes
To those bright realms above,
That glorious temple in the skies,
Where dwells eternal love.

2 Before the awful throne we bow
Of heaven's Almighty King:
Here we present the solemn vow,
And hymns of praise we sing.

458

JERVIS.

3 Thee we adore, and, Lord, to thee
Our filial duty pay:

Thy service, unconstrained and free,
Conducts to endless day.

4 While in thy house of prayer we kneel,
With trust and holy fear,

Thy mercy and thy truth reveal,
And lend a gracious ear.

5 With fervor teach our hearts to pray,
And tune our lips to sing,

Nor from thy presence cast away
The sacrifice we bring.

DODDRIDGE,

The living Sacrifice.

1 AND will the eternal King

So mean a gift regard?

That offering, Lord, with joy we bring,
Which thy own hand prepared.

2 We own thy various claim,
And to thine altar move,
The willing victims of thy grace,
And bound with cords of love.

3 Descend, celestial fire,

The sacrifice inflame;

So shall a grateful odor rise
Through our Redeemer's name.
