which we have been favoured

with in the past, we propose to reserve a portion of our space each month for what will in future be known as

OUR PIONEER COLUMN. In it will appear the names of those readers of our Magazine who are willing to render us voluntary assistance in making YOUNG ENGLAND more widely known, both in their own neighbourhoods and elsewhere. We have had a large number of illustrated prospectuses prepared, and a packet of these may be had, post free, at any time, if our readers will forward us their names and addresses. These attractive leaflets, given away with a word or two of recommendation, will go far towards promoting the interests of our already popular Magazine. The Editor invites his readers, young and old, to communicate with him on this subject; all letters will be sure to receive prompt attention. A closer bond of union will thus be formed between him and the boys and girls who have made YOUNG ENGLAND their own Magazine.

The following is a list of some of the young people who have lately rendered us their loyal support in this and other ways:Frances Evans, 40, Prospect-street, Plymouth.

Pattie E. Varnam, Thornton, Leicester.

John Morgan, Wesleyan College, Taunton.

James C. Jardine, Chiltern-road, Dunstable.

Annie F. Chaney, 139, High-street, Uxbridge.

Charles Stevenson, The Woodlands, Lisburn, Ireland.
Annie E. Potter, Market End, Coggeshall, Essex.

John Aspinall, 10, Blackburn-road, Great Harwood, near
Accrington, Lancashire.

Edith E. Sayers, 63, High-street, Lewisham.
Aleida van der Meulen, 121, Graham-road, Dalston.
Martha Leather, Belmont-villas, Merton-road, Wandsworth.
Virgil Boys, 98, Lyndhurst-road, Peckham.

Ernest L. Holloway, 26, Harvest-road, Tollington-road, N.
Robert Hutton, 44, Wellclose-square, Leman-street, E.
Thomas Beeby, Holm Farm, Low Lorton, near Cockermouth,
Cumberland.

James E. Archibald, College Villas, Alston, near Preston.
S. W. Collins, Holland House, Clapham Common.

THE READERS OF "EXCELSIOR " Are informed that from the beginning of the New Year "EXCELSIOR " will be incorporated with YOUNG ENGLAND, and its most popular features will be continued in these pages. The Editor of "EXCELSIOR," Mr. W. H. GROSER, B.Sc., will co-operate in making YOUNG ENGLAND acceptable to the large number of senior scholars and others who are readers of this Magazine, and as an earnest of his kind services, we may refer to the series "Your Own Bible, and How to Read It," which he has commenced this month. He will also undertake a scientific depart

ment entitled "OUR 'OLOGY PAGE."

GO OUR READERS.

HE new volume of YOUNG ENGLAND, which commences with the present number, will be one which will commend itself to all young people. Popular in the past, we shall strive to make it even more attractive, and the reputation of being a pure and healthy magazine, which it has already gained, will, we doubt not, be still further enhanced.

Instead of the story of "DENNY," which created such interest among our readers in the last volume, there will be the NEW SERIAL TALE, "I, BENJAMIN HOLBECK," the opening chapters of which appear this month.

Our young lady readers will find MISS GODDARD'S story of " ALISON BRAND" followed, if not accompanied, by a well-written tale, entitled, "KATE'S ORDEAL," by the author of "Harry Lawley."

Boys of a nautical turn of mind will feel their wants supplied by the "SEA STORIES," which will appear monthly. Sunday scholars will look out for the series on "THE GREAT VICTORIES OF BIBLE DAYS," and for papers from the pen of W. H. GROSER, B.Sc., entitled "YOUR OWN BIBLE, AND HOW TO READ IT." The TALKS ON THE INTERNATIONAL GOLDEN TEXTS Will furnish additional help and information.

Among the other serials will be "MISSIONARY ADVENTURES, PERILS, AND ESCAPES, by MRS. E. R. PITMAN; THE BROAD ARROW," a fine tale of adventure in China, by Rev. H. B. YATES; and a story of the days of Frederick the Great, entitled, "THE SERGEANT OF MAGDEBURG."

OF THOUGHT AND ACTION."

Lovers of science will be much pleased with Mr. F. M. HOLMES' 66 EASY CHAPTERS ON ASTRONOMY," and will not fail to look out eagerly for "OUR 'OLOGY PAGE." History and biography will be represented by a series of papers, entitled, "KINGS AND QUEENS SURE OF HIS MANHOOD," by MRS. C. M. CLARK, and "BY A WAY THEY KNEW NOT," from the pen of FAITH CHILTERN, are two capital tales, which we shall publish as soon as we can find space. "TALES OF THE THAMES IN BYGONE DAYS,' "THE PLAY-TIME OF GREAT MEN," and a host of other papers will also, ere long, meet "OTHER BOYS" (sketches of boy-life in foreign lands), the reader's eye.

PUZZLEDOM," too, will supply lighter material for amusement, and, through "OUR YOUNG AUTHORS' PAGE," YOUNG ENGLAND will hold out a hand to help and encourage the literary aspirations of its contributors. As to our monthly "PRIZE COMPETITIONS they will speak for themselves. They have been a favourite feature in our Magazine during the past, and we hope to make them doubly interesting during the coming year.

III. DOUBLE ACROSTIC.

Nor nave, nor chancel, yet my first is found
In every village church on English ground;
In second a vast empire you may see,
Which owes allegiance to Her Majesty ;
Third doth a fuel name, which, strange to learn,
Is made by fire, and then in fire doth burn;
From fourth "the fragrant weed," as smokers say,
Is shipped to English ports from day to day;
The opposite of whisper fifth doth show;
And sixth the title of a book you know.
Whilst seventh and last, in Eastern countries found,
In languages is skilled, both words and sound.
