STATE OF WISCONSIN.

Assembly Journal.

The thirty-fifth annual session of the legislature of the state of

Wisconsin met at 12 o'clock M., at the capitol in Madison, pursu-

ant to the constitution of the state.

John E. Eldred, chief clerk of the last assembly, called the as-

sembly to order, and a list of members-elect, as certified by the
secretary of state, was read as follows:

Timme, secretary of state of the state of Wisconsin, do hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct list of the members of the assembly of the state of Wisconsin, elected at the general election held on the eighth day of November, A. D. 1881, as appears from the certificates of the county clerks of the several counties named in the foregoing list, now on file in this department. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my official seal, at the capitol in the city of Madison, this 11th day of January, A. D. 1882. [SEAL.]

All the gentlemen certified as members (except Mr. Keogh, who was absent) subscribed to the oath of office, which was administered by Hon. W. P. Lyon, associate justice of the supreme court.

The roll was called, and the following members answered to their names:

There being a constitutional quorum present the assembly was declared qualified to proceed to business.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

On motion the assembly proceeded to election of speaker.
Mr. Keyes presented the name of F. L. Gilson, of Pierce.
Mr. D. W. Maxon presented the name of John Winans, of Rock.
The roll being called,

The following gentlemen voted for Mr. Gilson:

Messrs. Babcock, Barber, Bartlett, Bate, Beckwith, Bolender, Bowles, Brownson, Buckstaff, Cabanis, Chamberlain, Conley, Davis, DeLano, Derthick, Estabrook, Evarts, Fingado, Gabriel, Grubb, Hogan, Howell, Huntley, Juve, Keyes, Kidd, Lane, Langer, Leonardson, Lindsay, Marshall, McConnell, McDill, McDonnell, McDowell, Meiklejohn, Milliken, Moeller, Murray, Ostrander, Parry, Peterson, Phillips, Pierce, S. Mr. Gilson voted for S. W. Pierce.

Mr. Winans voted for E. Keogh.

Mr. Gilson having received a majority of all the votes cast was declared duly elected speaker.

Messrs. Winans, Pierce and Keyes were appointed a committee to escort the speaker elect to the chair.

On assuming the chair, Mr. Gilson said:

Gentlemen of the Assembly:- For the honor which I have this day received from you, I extend my most heartfelt thanks.

In the fulfillment of my duties of speaker of this assembly, I shall many times be obliged to ask, and I trust to receive, the kindest indulgence at your hands; and I ask this, both on account of my inexperience and the desire that is within me to do equal and exact justice to all. Under no condition, driven by no stress of circumstances, will I depart from that strict impartiality which should characterize all the acts and decisions of a presiding officer.

And at the opening of this session permit me to say that when became members of this legislature, we undertook to give, and the people of this state have the right to expect from us, a strict but not niggardly economy in the administration of all the affairs of state that may come before us. undertook to give, and the people of this state have a right to expect, the same painstaking care, the same scrupulous honor, that we would give to our own private and most important affairs, so that when our work is done, and garnered into that mighty sheaf of the years, that shall never be unbound, it may remain an enduring monument of the utmost fidelity and the highest integrity, honorable alike to ourselves and the state; and further, as harmony is the strength of all institutions, may harmony be the cloud by day and the star by night that shall guide us in all our deliberations.

On motion of Mr. Pierce,

The assembly proceeded to the election of chief clerk.
The roll being called,

Mr. Coe having received a majority of all the votes cast was declared elected chief clerk. He appeared at the desk and took the oath of office, administered by the speaker.

On motion of Mr. Price,

The assembly proceeded to the election of sergeant-at-arms.
The vote was as follows:

The oath of office was administered by the speaker, and he entered upon the discharge of his duties.
