fall ftand at the latter day upon the earth; and though after my skin worms deftroy this body, yet in my flefh fhall I fee God; whom I fhall fee for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reign be confumed in me."

It is very remarkable that Job fhould with his words were printed in a book, that they might be preferved to the latest generation, long before printing was known; but fo it is his defire is granted; his words are printed in a book, and this is what he faid, "I know my REDEEMER liveth," &c. Job knew that Chrift would stand upon the earth in the latter days; this cannot mean his being on the earth before he was crucified. Did Job then rife and fee him? We have no account of it. He had reference to the fecond coming of the fon of man when he will come and all the faints with him; Job with the reft, when they will reign with him a thousand years. It is particularly mentioned here, that Chrift fhall STAND upon the earth; this exactly agrees with what Zechariah fays upon the fame fubject; chap. xiv. 4, "And his feet fhall STAND in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerufalem on the eaft.” Job knew he would ftand upon the earth; and Zechariah tells us where he will stand, and that when he ftands on that mount, (a place where Chrift oft reforted) the mountain will cleave in the midft.. Jefus afcended from this mount, and when he comes, it will be to that fame place. This the angels have declared; Acts, i, 9, 10, 11, "And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their fight; and while they looked ftedfaftly toward heaven, as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which alfo faid, ye men of Galilee why ftand ye gazing up into heaven? This fame Jefus which is taken up from you into heaven, fhall fo come in like manner as ye have feen him go into heaven." Chrift afcended from the mount of Olives; fee verfe 12, The angels faid he would return in the fame manner that he went from the earth. His feet will, without any doubt, stand in the fame place they did before he left the earth.

What is recorded in Pfalm 1. 3, 4, I think refers to the fame thing." Our God fhall come, and fhall not keep: filence; a fire fhall devour before him, and it fhall be very tempeftuous round about him. He fhall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people."

I once thought this refered to the laft Judgment; but I think that if any perfon compares this with what is faid. concerning his bringing his enemies into the valley of decifion to plead with them by fire and fword, he will fee that this refers to the fame coming of Christ. That in Malachi, iii. 1, 2, 3, I think must have reference to the fame glorious event.

"And the LORD whom ye feek fhall fuddenly come to his temple, even the meffenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in; behold he fhall come, faith the LORD of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? And who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fuller's foap. And he fhall fet as a refiner and purifier of filver; and he shall purify the fons of Levi, and purge them as gold and filver, that they may of fer unto the LORD an offering in righteoufnefs. Then fhall the offering of Judah and Jerufalem be pleafant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years."

It appears to me that this coming of the Meffenger of the covenant, cannot refer to any other time than that when Christ comes to reign on the earth: for he is fpoken of as the meffenger of the covenant, which is the new covenant, the one which will be made in that day. He is faid to be the one they feek, and it is certain that the Jews ftill feek for their MESSIAH, and Have feveral times thought they had found him. It is faid he fhall

come fuddenly into his temple; this has never been; for when he went into the temple, it was fo privately, that they fearched to find him..

When he was on earth before, did he purify the fons of Levi? no; but they filled up the measure of their cup,. and he faw them given over to hardness of heart and blindness of mind: The offering of Judah, fince Chrifti

was upon earth, has never been pleasant as in the days of old; for instead of that, the daily facrifice has ceased for hundreds of years; but when he comes fuddenly on the mount of Olives, for the relief of his people and the def truction of his enemies, then will this prophecy be fulfilled, and not before. Unless this is the meaning of this prophecy, I cannot tell where to place it; for it was not fulfilled when Chrift was on earth, and it cannot be after the general judgment; therefore it must have reference to Chrift's coming to be afwift witness against his enemies, and an helper to his friends. The words of Zechariah concerning the coming of Christ are remarkably clear, Zech. xiv. 4, 5, "And his feet fhall ftand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerufalem on the east ; and the mount of Olives fhall cleave in the midst thereof towards the east and towards the west, and there fhall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain fhall remove towards the north, and half of it towards the fouth.".

Jefus Christ often spake to his difciples of this fecond coming to reign on the earth. Matthew xvi. 27, "For the fon of man fhall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then fhall he reward every man accor ding to his works." People are generally taught that when Chrift comes the world will be at an end; but his coming will be before the end of the world; fo the difciples understood it; Matth. xxiv. 3, "Tell us when hall these things be? and what fhall be the fign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? It is evident from this that they confidered Christ's coming one thing, and the end of the world another. I believe that when he comes again, he will finish all he has to do on earth, and the laft thing will be the raifing all the dead, judging them, and giving them a reward according to their works.

Jefus Chrift, was particular in telling his difciples that when he comes again he fhould be feen. Mark xiii. 26, "And then they fhall SEE the fon of man coming in the clouds with power and great glory." When Jefus was adjured by the high priest whether he was the fon ofGod, he faid; Mark xiv. 62, "And Jesus said, I am; and ye

fhall SEE the fon of man fetting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven." By a cloud he was received out of the difciples fight, and on a cloud he will fhew himself when he comes again.

The apoftles have faid muck of this coming of Christ to reign on the earth. Paul has mentioned it in almoft every epiftle he has written. He fays, Coloffians iii. 4, "When Chrift, who is our life, fhall appear, then shall ye alfc appear with him in glory." 1 Theffalonians i. 10,"And to wait for his fon from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jefus, which delivered us from the wrath to come." In Chap. iii. 13, he mentions this coming of Chrift with all his faints, in the fame manner as Enoch and Zechariah have. Enoch fays he will come with ten thousands of his faints, Zechariah fays he will come, and all the faints with him; Paul fays here; "To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holinefs before God, even our Father, at the coming of our LORD Jefus Chrift with all his faints." This must refer to the time when Christ comes to the mount of Olives, fee also chap. iv. 14, "For if we believe that Jefus died, and rofe again, even fo them alfo which fleep in Jefus will God bring with him.” In Paul's Epiftle to Titus, this coming of Chrift is mentioned. Titus ii. 13, "Looking for that bleffed hope, and glorious appearing of the great God, and our Saviour Jefus Chrift." Heb. ix. 28, "And unto them that look for him fhall he appear the second time without fin unto falvation." Many people think that the fecond coming of Chrift has reference to his coming in the deftruction of Jerufalem; but did he then ap pear on the mount of Olives? did the mountain part affunder? were the dead faints raised at that time? was the Roman army deftroyed then? Did the Jews fight and obtain their wealth? Certainly thefe things did not takeplace then; but to the contrary, the difciples fled into the mountains, the Jews were flain or carried captive, and the army was victorious; at the fecond coming of Christ all these things are to take place, to the joy of the faints, and the aftonifhment and deftruction of his enemies.

It is generally understood that John had the Revelation of Christ on the ifle of Patmos, after the deftruction of Jerufalem, and in that book, there is much faid of this coming of Christ the coming of Chrift to deftroy hisenemies, raise the dead faints, and reign on the earth a thousand years is mentioned fix times-Revelation i. 7, "Behold he COMETH with clouds; and every eye shall fee him, and they alfo which pierced him; and all kindreds of the earth fhall wail because of him. Even fo, Amen." Chap. ii. 25, "But that which ye have already, hold fast till I COME." Chap. iii. 11, "Behold, I COME quickly; hold that faft which thou haft; that no man take thy crown." Chap. xvi. 15, "Behold, I COME as a thief; bleffed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments." Chap. xxii. 7, "Behold, I COME quickly; blessed is he that keepeth the fayings of the prophecy of this book." Ver. 12, "And behold, I COME quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”. Ver 20, "He which teftifieth these things faith, Surely I come quickly; Amen. Even fo come LORD JESUS." It is certain that the fcriptures mention the fecond coming of Chrift to deftroy an army which fhall come against the Jews at Jerufalem, to raise the dead faints, and reign on the earth before the last Judgment; this has never been, and therefore is yet to come as thefe places of fcripture abundantly prove.

That this coming will be a long time. after the death of the apostles, is evident from what Peter fays, the fcoffers of the laft day will fay concerning this coming of Christ. 2 Peter . 3, 4, 'Knowing this first, that there fhall come in the last days, fcoffers, walking after their own lufts; and saying, where is the promise of his coming for fince the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation." If fcripture is any proof of this fecond coming of Chrift, here is certainly proof enough.

When Jefus Chrift fpake of his coming, he told his difciples of the figns of his coming, by which all might know when the time was near. He fays there fhall be wars, and rumours of wars, earthquakes, famines, pef
