INTRODUCTORY.

ABOUT a hundred years since there was a clergyman settled in one of the most picturesque towns of New England,

a most excellent

man, but very eccentric. It was the custom to request prayers for every emergency of life, — birth, death, illness, friends at sea, etc. During the war between England and America, these petitions were especially numerous. One Sunday morning more notes and petitions came than it was possible for the old gentleman to read. Gathering them all up in his hands, he said, "Here are all sorts of petitions, from all sorts of people, about all sorts of things. Let us pray."

My collection is something in this wise, truly – about all sorts of things; a curious medley of
