PREFACE

THE object in presenting this abridged edition of the Don Quijote has been to place in the hands of High School and College students in a convenient form and suitable size this great masterpiece of world literature.

In order to accomplish this purpose we have not hesitated to discard entirely all the interpolated stories often unessential to the main plot, and to make considerable omissions in the original text whenever long and at times tedious digressions occur. It is our belief that in spite of this merciless pruning the reading of the text in its present form will offer no perceptible lack of continuity and ensemble.

Most of the editions of the Don Quijote have kept the original spelling; it has seemed wise, however, in an edition intended for beginners that the text should be made to conform in spelling, and in the use of the accent, to the modern rules of the Spanish Academy. Only in very few cases have we kept an obsolete word or spelling. These cases are fully explained in the Notes or in the Vocabulary.

In the Notes, we have endeavored to cover practically every difficulty that the student may find in the course of his reading.

The Vocabulary has been made as exhaustive as possible.
